In August of 2023, the Los Angeles Dodgers retired Fernando Valenzuela's legendary No. 34, recognizing his influence and legacy in LA during a 3-day "Fernandomania" celebration. The birth of the Fernandomania phenomenon took place in the 1981 season, as Valenzuela became the first rookie to lead the National League in strikeouts, first player to win the Rookie of the Year Award and Cy Young Award in the same season and helped the Dodgers win the World Series. "To be a part of the group that includes so many legends is a great honor," Valenzuela said. "But also for the fans the support they've given me as a player and working for the Dodgers, this is also for them. I'm happy for all the fans and all the people who have followed my career. They're going to be very excited to know that my No. 34 is being retired." On that special night, the Dodgers honored the beloved icon whose impact extended well past the diamond.
